This is not a scene from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. This is Lake Hillier, a lake found in Western Australia.
Lake Hillier was discovered in 1802 and scientist still do not know for sure why its water is pink.
The water is not harmful to humans and when removed from the lake, like gathered in a container, the water remains pink.
Some experts believe that the pink color is a result of the salt in the water. Lake Hillier has 10 times as much salt as most lakes.
The high level of salt allows specific organisms Dunaliella salina and Halobacteria to live in the water. Some point to these organisms as the cause.
Another explanation is that the high salt concentration causes crust that forms red halophilic bacteria. The idea is that this red bacteria cause the pink hue.
Whatever the reason, we think that this is very cool. It’s amazing what really is out there in this world of ours!
